Anticipatory Guidance: Tips for Working with Families
The following suggestions are offered to encourage the formation of positive working relationships with families.

Remember that the family is the primary support system for the child or teen and the preferred point of intervention.

Communicate in a manner that is simple, honest, and nonjudgmental.

Support the family's feelings of adequacy as parents.

Respect cultural values when providing guidance and health care services.

Recognize and share the value of the child's individuality with the family.

Avoid using labels and stereotypes.

Help the family to cope with any problems that may be identified.

Reassure the family about behaviors that are developmentally appropriate and normal.

Refer families to behavioral health and support services as needed or appropriate.
